12:05 pm - Post Turtle (warning, political content)
While suturing up a cut on the hand of a 75 year old rancher, whose hand had been caught in the gate while working his cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Obama, and his being our president.

The old rancher said, "Well, ya know, Obama is just a Post Turtle."
Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked, "What's a "Post Turtle?"
The old rancher said, "Well, when you're driving down a country road, and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle."
The old rancher saw the puzzled look on the doctor's face so he continued to explain.

"You know he didn't get up there by himself, he doesn't belong up there, he doesn't know what to do while he's up there, he sure as heck ain't goin' anywhere, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put him up there in the first place."

Well you might just take him for an easy mark
And there's many a man has tried his hand
And there's worse than wolves in the borderland dark

From the savage men to the government hounds
Try to take what's yours and tear you through
But them that run with me got my back
It's a fool don't know that his family's his crew

Don't tell me what I cannot do
Don't think I've got to run from you

9:47 am - Well, that was interesting
So....I talked to Peg yesterday for the first time in over two years.

Apparently, she is now working in the lawn & garden center at the Lowe's in San Antonio, although she is currently down with a torn rotator cuff in her shoulder. Looks like we both decided to give ourself injuries for our birthday.

She is still living at home with her parents and around a dozen or so cats and an army of chickens. She has alot of regrets about her decisions over the last five years, but I have no sympathy for self-inflicted wounds. I haven't heard of her making any attempts to keep in contact with anybody out here either, although she was apparently planning a visit out here this week, if she hadn't injured herself.

I filled her in on all the latest events amongst us all. She plays WoW now for those who are interested, some server starting with a "T" name or some such.

On the plus side, I felt absolutely nothing during the conversation.

10:49 pm - Figured I should post this again now. *LOL*
Now accepting applications for "Full Time Girlfriend"

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Must be a gamer (or willing to learn)
Must be SCA (or willing to be indoctrinated into our insanity)
Must be intelligent (non-negotiable)
Sci-Fi / Fantasy geekdom preferred.
Nocturnal nature preferred.
Must understand that hygine is not optional
Must love a wide and eclectic selection of music (Folk, Classical, Rock, Industrial, etc...)
Must have an interest in history…especially Ancient Egypt, Rome, Middle Ages, Age of Piracy,
Victorian Era, Roaring 20’s, and the 1940’s.
Must love vampires and pirates….or both together...in fact a general love of the horror
genre is probably mandatory.
Must not be a chain-smoker.
Must enjoy relaxing with a good movie on the couch.
Must enjoy a nice dinner out.
Absolutely no children.
Pagan preferred, open minded is fine as well.
Must not get jealous of dancers while I am drumming…I hardly notice them anyway, just
ask Klaus.

In addition,
I would like to not be the low man on the priority totem pole…I don’t expect to be #1, but it would be refreshing to be rated above sleep, cigarettes, video games, or TV. I spent many years at the bottom of the list and can do without that fun again.

All applicants would be required to undergo a rigorous screening process by the ladies of the Iron Maiden so that household compatibility issues would be resolved. Those who fail to pass will be given a full burial.

1:56 pm - For Ketill (sp?)
Loyalty: I hold loyalty above all other virtues except Honor. I find that one of the greatest sorrows of the modern age is the fact that a concept like loyalty is so seldom found in people's character. I doubt you could find a person who has not had someone cheat on them or sell them out for their own benefit. It seems like most people live in a permanent "grass is greener on the other side" sort of mentality and just cannot remain content with the situations they have chosen. I rank honesty in the same boat, since one often lives or dies alongside the other.

History: I've always had a love of history, the facts and legends of days gone by fascinate me to no end. I feel like an information sponge when it comes to these kind of things and although I have a preference for Egyptology, Greco-Roman, Civil War, Roaring 20's and WWI - WWII eras, just about anything historical will pique my interest. Knowing the past allows you a greater understanding of how the present will evolve into the future. Things like looking how "well" bullshit tactics like appeasement have worked in the past, and shuddering when you look at how this Country is going to be approaching future terrorist attacks.

Babylon 5: Quite possibly the best TV show ever made. It was epic in scale, had characters you could really get to know and respect and just enough humor to keep things in perspective. The writing has left a great many quotes that still seem profound to anyone who "gets it". If you haven't seen the series, I can't recommend it enough.

Drumming: I just sort of stumbled into drumming to have something artistic to do, I always enjoyed the drumming sounds and the dancing circles and after a bit of practice, I found that I have a natural knack for it. I'll never be one of the great drummers in the world, but I'm competent enough that alot of camps will seek me out to organize and lead the drumming for thier parties. I enjoy teaching as well, and one thing we need is drummers who can play something other than drunken Beledi.

Books: I love books, I know this may be a revelation to some, but I love being surrounded by the written word. From game books to novels, from reference material to periodicals....I love those printed tomes. No amount of electronic PDA, PDF or other three letter doo-dad will ever supplant holding a nice book and reading for me. I'll ready anything in a pinch, but tend to stick mostly to sci-fi, fantasy, historical books and the occasional biography....not to mention a vast and ever-growing gaming library that threatens to devour the living room and everyone in it.

10:27 am - For Ty
Comment to this post and I will give you 5 subjects/things I associate you with. Then post this in your LJ and elaborate on the subjects given.

Pagan: This may shock some people, but....I am a witch. Actually, I grew up in a pseudo-Pagan household. By this I mean that my mother and grandparents pay lip-service to Christianity, primarily because in the 30's-50's, you couldn't really do otherwise, but their active beliefs is a sort of mix of Shamanism and general faith. That side of my family is very tied to our Choctaw / Cherokee heritage and growing up, it showed in their reverence to "the spirits". In my teens I began to read a great deal to try to find something more suited to what I saw in the world and eventually settled upon what amounts to a combination of traditional Wicca, mixed with alot of Cabalistic Enochian Magick. As far as I know, I'm one of the few Ordained Wiccan priests here in San Diego (although all it really takes is filling out a form....ordination is no great thing). This allows me to perform legally binding marriages, and has led to many occasions where I've been able to counsel people, sometimes by giving spiritual advice, other times by just being there to listen without expectations or preconceptions. Sometimes it can get a bit difficult, such as when the latest crop of "rainbow chasing smurf herders" causes people to look upon witchcraft as a less than serious religion, but I just remember that the other religions have their flaky idiots as well and deal with it. However, between Hollywood and Emo kids, it's an uphill battle all the way.

Family: My biological family and I are not close. I see my mom and grandfather a couple times a year, my local aunts, uncles, cousins maybe once a year and I talk to my mom about once every couple months. That's about all the involvement I care to have. These days, I have little in common with them and my life is too busy to make room. My real family is my SCA Household. I've managed to put together a menagerie of some of the finest people I've ever known and I consider every one of them a member of my family. Farlin and Ty are like my brother and sister, to the point that on most occasions we share a brain. Every member of the house knows that I would go to the ends of the earth to help them on a moments notice, and the great thing is that they all do the same for each other and myself. We may have moments of annoyance, like any family....but if you screw with the Maiden, you screw with all of us. The bonds of loyalty between the house gives me my greatest sense of pride in this life.

LARP: Live-Action-Role-Playing is how I seem to have met a great deal of my friends. I enjoy gaming beyond almost any other activity and LARPing is especially fun. It's like gaming, acting and costuming all at the same time. Many of us met either in the old Battlefield San Diego game or in the Baptism of Fire game that I ran. In the hey-day of LARPing, we used to get 70+ people together at least twice a month for some fantastic storytelling. These days, with the advent of WoW, Online Gaming and other sedentary distractions....most LARP's count themselves lucky to get 15-20 people together. A sad end to a once great era, but it is just not possible to effectively run a LARP with less than about 30 people. One of these days, If I can gather enough people who can show up consistantly, I may put together another LARP, but the last attempt could only gather 10-15 at any given time. Hardly even worth the effort it seemed.

Drinking: I like to drink, although I've found that my drinking has significantly dropped off in the last couple years. I only drink significantly at war, parties and the occasional special occasion (like last nights B-day party). Otherwise, I'm content to have a beer or two and call it good. Over the years my taste in alcohol has been refined to the point where now I tend to only go for good rum, good single-malt scotch, premium beer and the occasional Saki binge. The days of "drinking to get messed up" are long behind me, although getting messed up as a side-effect of drinking good booze is always an added benefit. Don't get me wrong though, my tolerance is still pretty damn high and I'll wager I can drop most people under the table due to my weight, experience and near-pickled liver.

SCA: Probably the defining trait about me. I joined the SCA in February of 1991 at the time of Estrella VII. This means I've been a SCAdian for 18 years now. Pretty close to half my life. Rathflaed said it best in his song "30 years". "30 years have come and gone, and with them many friends, pass the bottle round me boys, and we'll drink again." I've seen a great deal of changes, both in membership and attitudes in the last 18 years. Some good, some not, but like all things, it is a growing and evolving entity. I've been an authorized fighter for 17 of those years, and although a spinal defect, my own weight and a decade in heavy armor have taken their toll on my health, I wouldn't have traded my memories and experiences for anything. Farlin asked me for my SCA resume awhile back.....in putting it together my jaw dropped when I realized just how much I've packed into the last couple decades of activity. Where else could one have such a diverse range of experiences and gain lifelong friends as a perk. Being able to put together my SCA household is the thing that has brought me the greatest amount of joy in my life, I look at it now and know that it is no longer just a collection of "my" friends, but a self-sustaining entity that will likely outlive me and become one of the "primary" households in the SCA. We already rank in status with Drafn, The Abbey, Corvus and 9th Legion as one of the "older" households out there.

The Honorable Lord Alastar de Coursayre,
Graduate of the Baronial Household

8:00 pm - weekend = suckage
Well, my iron constitution has finally been beaten down by some sort of sinus and throat head cold thing. For two days it has felt like every time I swallow my throat was lined with broken glass and sand.

After Nyquil, Dayquil and alot of Fallout 3 on the couch, things are beginning to feel a bit more normal, at least I can swallow with only minor discomfort instead of stabbing pain from my throat to my eyes.

I blame Lou, for the last 3-4 months, he has been coming home sick damn near every other weekend.

At least it gave me time to finish painting some more Tau figures

current mood: sick

Your result for Which Vampire the Masquerade Clan Are You?...

The Serpents {Followers of Set}

The wickeldy seductive Followers of Set{Setites} are a vampire clan that stands at odds with all the others. They follow the Ancient Egyptian pagan doctrine and believe the Desert God Set to be the first vampire. They wish to ensnare all the other clans under their power. Indeed, they will use all the means of the modern nights to do so. Be it drugs, sex, power, love, weapons or any other desire, the Setites will supply it, for a cost. They crave power above all others. They see the other clans as weak and barely regard them as vampires as the other clans believe the biblical Caine to be the first vampire. Setites know how to get attention. They are impeccable dressers and they speak with a gold plated tongue. They know what people want and they know how to get it.

For you to be a Follower of Set means that you are a manipulator of great skill. You realize that everyone may have a use to you someday so you try not to alienate anyone. You use subtle means to slowly control those around you. You befriend, manipulate, control and dominate those around you. You have no empathetic care towards others but you do have a great sense of empathic awareness in knowing what people want. With these traits you have the power to be a great leader or one of the most dangerous vampires to walk before the sun.

Your result for Reincarnation Placement Exam...

Dante's Inferno

Ooh! Bad luck, old chap.

We nearly put you into the Pleasure Dome of Kublai Khan. You missed it by *that* much. Remember, you were graded on a curve, so somebody else nudged you out of that slot.

According to your answers you can handle the crowds, chaos and complications of your new home. You may even find it a bit romantic, in a twisted way. But you don't indicate much ardor for civilization, nor for the folks who build it -- your fellow man. Nor do you seem to care for your fellow man's love of life, spirituality, pleasure and... just plain fun.

So, this is the only place we could really fit you in. Welcome to Hell. We hope that before you arrived, you took advantage of our special, limited-time offer to spend three weeks in Miami Beach. But... that's all over, now.

I know it's crowded, but there's no use complaining. At least it's warm. Here's a shovel. Get to work.
